Abstract: The Lanten Yao people, an upland migrating branch of the Yao ethnic group in South China and Southeast Asia, preserve a wide range of beliefs, myths, and rituals related to rice farming. This article explores their rice culture, which sheds light on the interrelationship between their indigenous animist beliefs (the “embryo”) and Daoism (the “husk”). The first half of this article is devoted to introducing different aspects of Lanten rice culture. It starts by discussing rice worship as a shared indigenous culture of multiple ethnic groups. It then combs through the history of rice farming among the Yao (especially the Lanten). Afterwards, it portrays a general picture of the Lanten people’s rice-related beliefs and seasonal rituals, relying on both published materials and ethnographic information from a Lanten village in Laos. The second half of this article zooms into one specific case: the magic of “Fetching the Rice-soul,” performed by Lanten Daoist ritual experts in Laos. It first studies a myth that serves as the cultural background of this magic, followed by an investigation of a manuscript that contains its textual descriptions, studied from both literary and ethnographic perspectives. Parallel examples from other Lanten communities in China are raised for comparison. This article concludes by recontextualizing the case of Lanten rice culture within the larger discussion of their ethnic-religious identity. It argues that indigenous animist beliefs remain at the core of their culture, which are then systematically appropriated through the Daoist liturgical framework. This is realized through the synthesis of Shennong (i.e., the deity of agriculture) in Lanten mythology and the Lanten Daoist priest in rituals. Although the magic applies a Daoist liturgical framework, its main body is the ritual re-enacting of the indigenous myth. Hence, metaphorically speaking, the relationship between Lanten native traditions and Daoism is comparable to a rice embryo contained in its husk, and both parties are essential in composing an organic whole. Through this case study, this article aims at adding knowledge to scholars’ understanding of ethnic-religious identity and the spread of Daoism among non-Han Chinese people.
