    This course is designed as an introduction   to the study of religions. It provides an overview of the knowledge necessary   to promote a critical approach to the study of religions at the academic   level: historical contextualisation and philosophical background; outline of   the most important modern and contemporary scholars of religion; outline of   some major issues in the field (secularization/de-secularization; market   model; theorization of religion); ritual. It also attempts to stimulate the   students to critically reflect on the definition(s) of religion and on the   applicability of this concept in the Chinese context.

    Part of the course will be made of   frontal lessons taking avail of digital supports (slide presentation, videos,   etc.). The rest will be dedicated to students’ presentations.

 

Examination: student’s   presentation + term paper.

    The students’ presentations will have a   time limit of 10 minutes and will discuss one of the topics assigned by the   teacher.

    The   term paper will be on themes assigned by the teacher and must show a   student’s level of critical thinking and of ability to develop a academic   argument. Layout – English: 10 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman 12pts.   Chinese: maximum 3000 characters.

 

Marks:   60% term paper; 20% student’s presentation; 20% attendance.

Contextualising the   problem and definitions of religion (18th and 19th   centuries): Locke, Hume; Rousseau; Idealism (Kant; Atheismusstreit – Fichte); Positivism (Comte, Darwin)

3. Critique of Religion   and Historical Materialism

Hegel; Feuerbach; Stirner; Karl Marx

4. Problematization:   Construction of a Field

Etymology (religio,   religere); early approaches
