世界著名漢學家勞格文先生對陳戍國教授遽歸道山表示哀悼

I have just learned the sad news of Professor Chen Shuguo’s early departure and wish to present my condolences to the family. Prof. Chen was the world’s greatest authority on the history of Confucian ritual practice, especially at the state level. Being myself interested in Daoist ritual, I was intrigued when I found his books in a Hong Kong bookshop. This led to me inviting him to a first conference, held in Paris in December 2006, where he presented a paper on Confucian state ritual in the Period of Division (220-589). He then participated in a second conference, held in Hong Kong in June 2012, and gave a paper on Confucian ritual in the Song. Both papers were well-received and were published in English translation in the Brill series on Chinese religion. Apart from his unique and thorough scholarship on a subject of vital importance to the understanding of the role of religious practice in Chinese imperial government, I remember him as a man of humble intelligence, a true Confucian sage.

我剛剛得知陳戍國教授過早離世的悲傷消息，我希望能向陳教授的家人致以哀悼。陳教授在儒家禮儀史研究領域造詣頗深，具有國際影響，尤其是在國家禮制層面的研究無人能及。我本人專注於道教儀式研究，曾在香港的一家書店買到他的著作，拜讀後深受啟發。這促使我邀請他參加2006年12月在巴黎舉行的一次會議，他在會上發表了一篇關於魏晉南北朝時期儒家國家禮儀的論文。之後他還參加了2012年6月在香港舉行的第二次會議，並發表了一篇關於宋代儒家禮儀的論文。這兩篇論文都廣受好評，被翻譯成英語發表在本人主編的《博瑞中國宗教史》叢書。我認為他在理解宗教實踐對古代中國政權的作用這一至關重要的問題上具有獨特而透徹的見解。陳教授為人謙和，在我的心目中他是一位真正的儒家聖賢。
